09 February 2004 13:55 Russian president to order more money for young defence-industry scientists Moscow, 9 February: Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that very soon "an instruction to the government
will be drawn up" to increase grants awarded to young scientists working in the defence industry to
R20,000-30,000.
"As well as patriotic feelings, there have to be other stimuli too," Putin said at a meeting of the Science
and High Technology Council.
Young scientist Maksim Chernodub, who addressed the council, said that as a recipient of the presidential grant he
gets R2,000 per month.
"Grants to the value of R2,000 are nothing, and discredit the whole idea," Putin said.
"The state must look at those branches (of science) that can be supported only by the state," Putin said.
He said developments in the defence industry were such a sector.
