RUSSIAN FOOD IMPORTS UP IN 2003
MOSCOW. Feb 6 (Interfax) - Russian imports of agricultural products increased to $11.2 billion in 2003, up from $10.3 in 2002, the Agricultural Ministry's regulation and quality control department deputy chief Alexander Lyakhovich told a news conference in Moscow on Friday. The press conference was timed to the opening of the international fair Prodexpo-2004 in Moscow. At the same time, the percentage of agricultural products and food imports among total imports decreased from 23.9% in 2002, to 21.3% in 2003, he said. Sergei Seryogin, deputy head of the Agriculture Ministry's food and processing industry department, said food imports in 2003 reached $7.8 billion, and the main suppliers were countries outside the CIS, who supplied products worth $6.8 billion. Imports accounted for 30% of the Russian food market in 2003, Seryogin said.
