US proposal to break traditional Armenian-Azeri military aid parity
[Presenter] In comparison with last year's equal and balanced approach, the US administration intends for the first time in 2005 to allocate 2m dollars to Armenia and 8m dollars to Azerbaijan in military aid. According to the law, the White House is suggesting the reduced amount, which will have to be increased given the Armenian lobby's influence in Congress. According to Radio Liberty, Armenian Defence Minister Serzh Sarkisyan said during a meeting at the Armenian embassy in Moscow that with 8m [dollars] the Azerbaijani armed forces will not become four times as strong as the Armenian armed forces. We have a gentleman's agreement with the leaders of the US Defence Department in the cooperation sphere, according to which the balance and equal size of military aid must be preserved.
