Russia makes progress at WTO accession talks says minister Berlin, 17 January: Russia has achieved progress at accession talks with the World Trade Organization [WTO]. The
sides agreed upon about 85 per cent of tariffs, Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Aleksey Gordeyev
said at the East-West agricultural forum in Berlin on Saturday [17 January]. Gordeyev is taking part in the world's
largest agroindustrial exhibition Green Week in the German capital.
"With some of the countries our talks have been concluded, with others, they are in the final stage," he
added. "Among points of disagreement on which so far they have failed to reach mutually acceptable agreements are
some agricultural products, aviation equipment, automobiles and some others," Gordeyev said. "Particularly
deep are disagreements over Russia's obligations with regard to state subsidies to agriculture," he said.
On the whole, Russia has entered the final stage of accession talks with WTO partners, at which the sides will have
to tackle the most difficult issues. Gordeyev believes that further progress will depend on "the readiness of
Russia's partners to take a constructive and pragmatic approach towards issues that are most sensitive for
Russia".
