16 January 2004 13:24 Tajik-Russian talks on space research centre hit snag Dushanbe, 16 January: Russian-Tajik talks on setting up an international research centre at the Pamir-Chakaltay [in
the Pamir mountains] facility for studying cosmic rays ended virtually in vain in Dushanbe today.
The Tajik side's unwillingness to drop property claims to the facility, which had been the property of the
Institute of Physics of the Soviet Union's Academy of Sciences during Soviet times, is a stumbling block in the
talks, the head of the Russian delegation, Deputy Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Andrey Kulagin, told
ITAR-TASS in an interview.
The Russian side considers that "the international centre should be set up at this property", the deputy
minister said.
At the same time, the deputy minister said that "the setting up of the international centre, in the work of
which leading countries' scientists are showing great interest, would undoubtedly positively influence
Tajikistan's image."
