Putin, minister for Chechnya, discuss unemployment Reporting on today's [16 January] meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the minister in charge of
coordinating activities of federal executive bodies relating to the social and economic advancement of Chechnya,
Stanislav Ilyasov, ITAR-TASS news agency quoted Ilyasov as telling the president that Chechnya's population now
stood at over 1m, as against 600,000 in 1994.
Replying to Putin's question about employment in Chechnya, Ilyasov said that the number of able-bodied people in
the republic stood at 460,000, of whom 170,000 were jobless; 160,000 were drawing unemployment benefits.
"Everything is being done to create new jobs," Ilyasov told the president.
