Soon, third generation mobile communications will emerge in Russia, Russian Telecommunications Minister Leonid Reiman stated today, according to NTV channel.
The top official said that specialists had already prepared for a prompt deployment of third generation (3G) mobile communications. According to Mr. Reiman, licenses for 3G cellular communications services will be granted after an open tender.
As for the term of launching a 3G network, the minister pointed out that this would depend on mobile providers who would take a risk and invest considerable resources in new equipment.
The official also stressed that in 2003 the number of mobile subscribers had already caught up with the number of fixed-line users reaching 35 million people.
The new 3G network allows files and videos to be downloaded directly to a mobile telephone. Also, a mobile videophone can emerge. There is a similar network in Japan. Some European countries are getting ready to launch it, too.
