Vladimir Zhirinovsky, the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR), will not run for president in 2004. He reported this today at the 15th conference of his party.
Instead of Mr. Zhirinovsky, one of four candidates will run for the post. They are Sergey Abeltsev, Alexander Kurdyumov, Oleg Malyshkin, and Alexey Chernyshov. A candidate will be elected at the party conference this Friday.
The LDPR leader assured that he would himself “lead his party to victory at the elections”. According to his forecasts, the party’s candidate will be the second in the presidential race.
Mr. Zhirinovsky considers the 2008 elections “crucial”. He is planning to run for the presidency that year. Earlier he emphasized that “LDPR will participate in these presidential elections for sure”.
The elections are to be held on March 14, 2004.
