22 December 2003 01:47 Unemployment rate in Russia up 250,000 in November MOSCOW. Dec 22 (Interfax) - The total unemployment rate in Russia was 6,170,000 in late November 2003, 250,000 more
than in October, the State Statistics Committee reported on Monday.
The Committee also reported, however, that the unemployment rate has gone down by 124,000 since early 2003
(6,294,000).
Russia estimates the unemployment rate using the standards employed by the International Labor Organization (ILO).
All jobless people who are actively searching for jobs in employment services, newspaper advertisements and through
personal contacts, and are ready to begin working immediately (meaning they are not sick or taking care of children or
elderly people) are defined as unemployed.
The unemployment rate in Russia was 8.6% of able-bodied people in late November 2003. The total number of able-bodied
people (employed and unemployed) was 71.4 million or about 50% of the population. [RU EUROPE EEU EMRG JOB] te aw
