23 December 2003 01:47 People in Need did not only distributed aid in Chechnya this year PRAGUE, Dec 23 (CTK) - Food for work - such was the slogan promoted by some employees of the People in Need society
in their activities in the North Caucasus this year.
The project of the same name was to decrease local population dependence from the food aid distributed free of
charge. In the Chechen capital of Grozny the society mediated jobs for about 2,000 people every month, as part of this
project, according to an assessment report of the society for 2003.
The People in Need society has been helping people in Chechnya and Ingushetia for four years already with supplying
basic foodstuffs to affected areas. However, in Grozny, some people had to work to deserve aid - most often they took
away debris, clean streets and work to restore green areas in the city.
The People in Need also distributed construction material to repair damaged houses in Chechnya. Thanks to this aid,
more than 1,200 houses have been reconstructed. In Grozny volunteers continued to help in repairing kindergartens and
schools
In Ingushetia, they opened a workshop for adolescents who were wounded in the war. Young people can make specially
adjusted furniture there and other means for the handicapped.
In Grozny, the People in Need established this year a centre for help to mothers with children who lost their
husbands in the war or part of their families.
Some money the People in Need obtained from the SOS Chechnya collections and other from foreign foundations and the
United Nations agencies.
The society this year mediated help worth more than 96 million crowns in North Caucasus.
