23 December 2003 18:56 Russian government wants its web site to expand and to offer new services Moscow, 23 December: The number of users of the Russian government's internet information portal should double
by the end of 2004, a deputy head of the government information department, Andrey Koshkin, announced today. He was
showing journalists a draft version of the new government portal.
The daily number of users of the government web site currently stands at about 4,000, Koshkin said. More than 100,000
citizens visit the web site monthly, he said. The new information structure "is aimed at expanding the range of
people interested in activities of the Russian government", he said.
He said that the government's new portal will be launched "for open testing" in February 2004. It will
operate "as an experiment, and users will be able to share their opinion on the portal", Koshkin said.
The launch is planned for March or the beginning of April 2004. The address for the Russian government's
internet portal will remain the same, Koshkin said. The Russian Federation government's current web site "will
be archived" over a period of four years.
The new government portal will consist of three sections. The first "will inherit the present structure of the
government site" and will cover all accessible information resources of the federal executive power agencies. The
second section will be telling users about Russia's social and economic development and the country's
intermediate-period development programme. The third section will be experimental, a place where citizens and
organizations will be able to receive information "on a number of pertinent problems". "Special
consultants" will work in this section to explain to citizens the work of the Russian government and possible
solutions to their problems, Koshkin said.
