19 December 2003 17:20 Moldova asks Russia for fresh supplies of "humanitarian" grain Moscow, 19 December: Moldova has asked the Russian government for humanitarian assistance with supplies of food
grain. Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Agriculture Minister Aleksey Gordeyev, who met Moldovan First Deputy Prime
Minister Vasile Iovv on Friday [19 December], told journalists this today.
Gordeyev said Moldova has asked for 50,000-60,000 tonnes of grain as humanitarian aid. Moldova was also willing to
purchase, in addition, roughly 300,000 tonnes of grain on a commercial basis.
The deputy prime minister said Russia could not yet respond to this request, since it has to decide the question of
its own commodity interventions on the grain market. "We will be ready to reply when we have assessed our domestic
market," he said.
Russia has already provided Moldova with 10,000 tonnes of grain in the form of humanitarian assistance.
