17 December 2003 15:08 European Commission allocates 9.5m euros for Chechnya Moscow, 17 December: The European Commission will allocate additional 9.5m euros to provide assistance to the
population of the Chechen Republic, the deputy head of the European Commission delegation in Moscow, Vincent Piket, told
journalists today.
According to Philippe Royan, the head of the European Commission Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO) [in Russia], "20
per cent of this sum will be channelled into improving health care, another 20 per cent into improving living
conditions, in Ingushetia above all, and 60 per cent will be used to purchase non-foodstuffs". "The funds will
be directed to support the most vulnerable sections of local population and displaced people in Chechnya - 140,000
people - and in the adjacent republics of Ingushetia and Dagestan - 80,000 people," he noted.
"This year ECHO has allocated 26m euros for these purposes, and a total of over 120m euros since 1999,"
Vincent Piket pointed out. "Thus, the EU has become the major donor of humanitarian aid in the region." He
gave assurances that next year "the financing will remain at the same level".
