13 December 2003 06:28 Russia, Norway improving Kola NPP`s safeguards MOSCOW. Dec 13 (Interfax) - Russia and Norway are engaged in a project aimed at installing safety control systems at
the Kola nuclear power plant in the Murmansk region as part of the Norwegian government's technical assistance for
the Russian facility, the Rosenergoatom nuclear power generating company told Interfax.
"The Norwegian government has allocated around 120 million Norwegian kroners for providing the Kola nuclear
power plant's power generating units with better safeguards," a Rosenergoatom spokesman said.
A delegation of Norway's IFE company, Finland's ABB Oy and Russia's Kurchatov Institute scientific
center visited the Kola plant a few days ago to install and launch safety parameters display systems (SPDS) and systems
for monitoring the reactor's active zones (SCORPIO).
"These systems were produced in Norway, but their software was developed by specialists from the Kurchatov
institute. The equipment and operations to adapt it for Russian standards cost 20 million Norwegian kroners," the
spokesman said.
Norway is planning a total of 39 projects aimed at enhancing the Kola nuclear power plant's safeguards.
Twenty-nine projects have already been implemented.
The Kola nuclear power plant operates four power generating units with VVER-440 reactors. Russia and Norway have been
working together at the facility since the 1990s. [RU EUROPE EEU EMRG NO ENK] tm <>
