Russian armed forces 1,132,000 strong
Moscow, 8 December: By 1 January 2004, the strength of the Russian armed forces will be 1,132,000, ITAR-TASS has learnt from the Defence Ministry's press service. According to the press service, 30,000 service jobs have been cut recently as scheduled. "By 2004 the strength of the army and navy will reach the optimal level of defence capabilities, which will allow us to speak about the completion of the most difficult and large-scale reforms in the army and navy, and concentrate on routine combat training and increasing the troops' combat readiness," the press service said.
