28 November 2003 00:42 Russia to set up special unit to guard nuclear plants MOSCOW. Nov 28 (Interfax) - Russia will set up a special unit to protect nuclear energy installations, Deputy
Interior Minister and commander of the Interior Troops Gen. Vyacheslav Tikhomirov announced on Friday.
Tikhomirov told an expanded session of the Interior Troops Council that the Interior Ministry and the Justice
Ministry will be in charge of setting up the unit.
Colonel Nikolai Chebotaryov, head of the diving service of the Interior Ministry Forces Command, told Interfax the
unit will augment existing nuclear power station security systems, while its direct task will be to guard water areas
near nuclear plants.
In the course of establishing the new unit, the Atomic Energy Ministry is expected to coordinate financing and
benefits for the unit's personnel, while the Interior Troops will settle issues of equipping and manning the new
