27 November 2003 18:55 Russian minister defends government`s privatization policy [Presenter] The treasury will receive record profits this year from the sale of unprofitable state enterprises. First
Deputy Property Relations Minister Aleksandr Braverman said at today's government meeting that 500 enterprises had
already been sold, another 300 would be privatized over the next month, and the total proceeds from the sales would
exceed R130bn.
Overall, the process of privatizing state property is scheduled to be complete in five years' time. At the same
time, the state needs to decide what to keep for itself and what to sell. The effectiveness of every enterprise will be
checked.
According to Braverman's calculations, around 10 per cent of state property is currently being misused, and so
is failing to yield any returns.
[Braverman, speaking at news briefing] We are not speeding up privatization for privatization's sake. We are
still treating each act of privatization as a series of effective measures. We're not aiming to shove everything
out, push it away and sell everything off irrespective of price and effectiveness. We still try to make every act [of
privatization] effective. But at the same time, we want to relieve the state of the load, this burden of ineffective
property.
