Govt commission approves import duties on raw sugar for 2004 MOSCOW. Nov 27 (Interfax) - The governmental commission for protective measures in foreign trade and customs and
tariff regulation will recommend that the government introduce raw sugar import duties in 2004, a commission source told
Interfax.
The commission thinks a raw sugar import duty should be introduced starting from January 1, and be based on raw sugar
prices on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
The Russian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade shall monitor prices and present information to the State
Customs Committee and the media on the 15th of each month. The State Customs Committee shall collect import duties
starting from the 1st of the next month in line with the established norms.
The commission said the import duty would be $270 per ton if the exchange price on raw sugar was smaller than $99.21
per ton. The duty will be $250 per ton if the price is $99.22-$112.44, and reduce to $235 if the prices ranged from
$112.45 to $125.66. The duty would be $221 for prices of $125.67-$141.1, and $206 for prices of $141.11 to $154.32.
The duty will go down to $194 if prices are $154.33-$167.55, and $180 if prices are $167.56-$182.98.
It will become $164 if prices are $182.99-$198.42, and $140 if prices are over $198.43.
In addition, the commission suggests an import duty on refined sugar of $340 per ton for the whole of 2004. [RU
