28 November 2003 15:47 Dagestan`s population up by 17 per cent, latest census says The staff of Molodezh Dagestana newspaper met the chairman of the Dagestani State Statistics Committee, Sergey
Ilyashenko, on 17 November. He thanked the editor-in-chief of Molodezh Dagestana, Gadzhi Abashilov, and the staff for
reports about the last year's census. Then Ilyashenko spoke about preliminary results of the census:
[Ilyashenko] An analysis of the final results in the centre has taken more time than planned. Thus, they will be
published by the end of the first quarter next year. But we can already speak about some preliminary results.
At the time of the census, the population of the Russian Federation was 145.1m people. Of them, 2.58m people lived in
Dagestan. We can say already now that some peoples of Dagestan are among 20 major ethnic groups in the Russian
Federation.
[Correspondent] What if they are viewed not as individual groups, but a single ethnic group?
[Ilyashenko] Obviously, they will be then among the five leading groups. In addition, not only Dagestani residents,
but also ethnic Dagestanis permanently living in other Russian regions should be taken into account.
[Passage omitted: some people refused to take part in census]
[Correspondent] What demographic process was discovered during the census?
[Ilyashenko] The census has confirmed the well-known fact: Russia's population is falling. The death rate in
Russia exceeds the birth rate. But we, residents of Dagestan, should not worry: Dagestan is among 10 Russian regions
(out of 89) where the birth rate, on the contrary, exceeds the death rate. In addition, Dagestan's population grew
by 17 per cent against the previous census.
[Passage omitted: problems during the census]
