Russia decides to deploy divers round nuclear power stations
Moscow, 28 November: Russia will set up a special-purpose unit tasked to protect nuclear energy industry installations, Army Gen Vyacheslav Tikhomirov, deputy interior minister and C-in-C of Internal Troops, said on Friday [28 November]. [Passage omitted] Col Nikolay Chebotarev, head of the diving service of the Internal Troops command, explained to Interfax-AVN that the new special unit would augment the existing nuclear power station security system, while its direct task would be to guard water areas near nuclear power stations. In the course of establishing the new unit, the Atomic Energy Ministry is expected to coordinate the issues of financing and social security of the new unit's personnel, while the Internal Troops will settle the issues of equipping and manning the new outfit.
