27 November 2003 08:04 Polish-Russian Talks in Warsaw Economic co-operation after Poland's accession to the EU was the main subject of consultations between Polish
Foreign Minister, Wlodzimierz Cimoszewicz, and his Russian counterpart, Igor Ivanow. After the talks held in Warsaw,
chief of the Polish diplomacy said that a "thorough analysis" of mutual economic relations should be carried
out soon. For the time being, however, the most important issues in bilateral relations remain unsolved. Russia fears
that Poland's accession will result in a slump of Russian exports due to anti-dumping laws and quotas compulsory in
the EU while the government in Warsaw is worried about the huge trade deficit with Russia, which amounts almost to
ZL4bn. The ministers also discussed a possible transfer of American military bases from Germany to the East. Igor Iwanow
stressed that his country is vitally interested in this issue and Moscow's position should always be taken into
consideration. Also, yesterday a Polish-Russia commission for "difficult affairs" met in the Office for
Veterans and Repressed Persons to talk about the issue of payment of damages to the Polish citizens who had been
detained in Soviet labour camps.
