10 November 2003 01:40 Over 14 million Muslims live in Russia MOSCOW. Nov 10 (Interfax) - About 14.5 million Muslims live in Russia, Nationalities Minister Vladimir Zorin told a
press conference at the Interfax main office, referring to preliminary results of the population census.
"This makes about 10% of the national population," Zorin said.
He said the number of Russian Jews had reduced from 540,000 to 230,000 from the previous census of 1989. Nowadays,
Jews make up 0.2% of the Russian population. The number of Russian Germans has also declined from 840,000 to 600,000
(0.4%).
The number of Russian Ukrainians and Belarussians is down by one- third, while the number of Armenians, Azerbaijanis,
Tajiks and Chechens is up. Armenians and Chechens are among the seven nationalities of Russia that number more than one
