10 November 2003 20:41 Russia`s UES eyes Slovakia`s electricity monopoly MOSCOW. Nov 11 (Interfax) - Unified Energy Systems of Russia (UES) intends to bid at a tender for the privatization
of Slovenske Elektrarne, Slovakia's biggest generating company.
UES, which is steadily increasing its presence on the FSU and Eastern Europe electricity markets, "had until
November 7 to register its bid and intended to participate in the tender," Tatyana Milyayeva, the Russian national
electricity company's chief press officer, told Interfax.
Milyayeva said UES would bid via its subsidiary ZAO Inter RAO UES.
The wholly state-owned Slovenske Elektrarne controls about 85% of Slovakia's power generating capacity. It
controls 7,000 megawatts of nuclear, hydro and heat generating capacity.
The government plans to sell 49% of the shares. Milyayeva said the tender winner would also receive the right to
manage the genco's power stations.
UES did not disclose the terms of the tender.
UES also plans to buy into the Bulgarian, Moldovan and Ukrainian power industries. It already controls power industry
assets in Armenia and Georgia.
UES owns 60% of the shares in ZAO Inter RAO UES. Rosenergoatom, the state nuclear power industry concern, owns the
rest. [RU ASIA EUROPE EEU EMRG SL ELG SK] pr
