10 November 2003 21:37 Putin says immigration should be based on Russia`s needs Moscow, 10 November: Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that it would be sensible to solve the country's
demographic problems partly by controlling migration in the Canadian way. He expressed this view today at a meeting with
young police officers.
"The majority of countries solve their demographic problems thanks to an inflow of immigrants," the
president said, offering as an example Canada, where special ministries select those immigrants "who are needed by
the country according to their age, profession, education and health". "It would be sensible for us to
organize our work along roughly the same lines, but taking into account our own special characteristics," the
president said.
