07 November 2003 14:35 Russian officials reportedly remove Chechens from refugee lists 6 November: The Council of NGOs reports that another population "census" will be held at the Chechen
refugee camp of Satsita. The reason for the procedure is that a few days ago, representatives of the so-called
"Moscow working group" groundlessly removed dozens of refugee families living in the camp from the lists of
the Migration Service.
The officials warned the people that those who failed to restore their names on the lists within three days would be
forcibly expelled from Satsita. The Moscow working group consists of representatives of different regions of Russia and
is led by a certain Col Brichko. Members of the group have been living at the local Assa Hotel for the last two months.
A room in the hotel costs R500 per day (expenses on one refugee total R15 per day).
Residents of Satsita, indignant with the activities of the group, decided to send a delegation to Nazran and try to
achieve justice in a court. An agreement was reached between representatives of the refugees and local officials in the
afternoon of 5 November to carry out a joint inspection in order to re-include on the Migration Service lists the names
that had been unjustly removed. The public council of the Satsita refugee camp will take part in the inspection.
