06 November 2003 13:51 Russian nuclear project in Iran violates no international rules - minister Russia is building a nuclear power plant in Iran in strict compliance with international agreements and it will not allow a handover of any sensitive nuclear technologies during this project, Russian Energy Minister Aleksandr Rumyantsev told reporters at the UN headquarters on Wednesday.
He pointed out that the construction of the power station in Bushehr was proceeding under thorough control by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). "IAEA inspectors carry out more than 60 inspections a year, and there are only 52 weeks in a year. That means that inspections take place every week, and they have not uncovered any schemes that would contradict the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty," Rumyantsev said.
The head of the IAEA said that the agency's board of directors was to discuss the status of Iran's scientific and technical projects in the nuclear sector in the coming two weeks. "We will follow this meeting closely," Rumyantsev said.
