31 October 2003 23:39 Russian govt support framework convention on protecting Caspian marine environment
MOSCOW. Oct 31 (Interfax) - The Russian government approved the project on a Framework Convention for the Protection
of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea proposed by the Russian foreign ministry with approval from the executive
branch.
The Russian government ordered the natural resource ministry, together with the foreign ministry, to conduct
negotiations with the interested sides and to sign the convention in Russia's name once an agreement is
reached.
The convention notes the worsening state of the marine environment of the Caspian Sea due to pollution as a result of
industrial activity.
Because of this, the Caspian littoral states intend to take immediate measures on ecological protection of the sea,
including the protection and regeneration of biological water recourses and reduction of harmful exhaust. They also plan
to conduct joint scientific research projects. [RU ASIA EUROPE EEU EMRG ENV POL] dt aw <>
