24 October 2003 12:06 Russia keeps extending causeway towards Ukrainian island - TV [Presenter] According to the latest information, work on the causeway in the Kerch Strait has been suspended. The
Russians are continuing to strengthen the part that has already been built, but they are not extending it any further.
It is reported that the Kuban Cossacks have already set up a defensive installation on the newly reclaimed land. Now we
have our special correspondent Vitaliy Kovach on a direct line to the studio. He will give us the latest news of events
in the Kerch Strait.
Hello, Vitaliy. What news do you have?
[Correspondent] Hello, Dmytro. Construction work is currently proceeding on the spit [causeway]. We have learnt that
now they are widening the causeway. They are bringing in construction materials. We were told in the operational
headquarters that the causeway was extended 10 metres overnight. Clearly, under cover of night, under cover of darkness,
some sort of work was carried out.
We have also learnt that in Moscow at this moment Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych and the prime minister of the
Autonomous Republic of Crimea [Serhiy Kunitsyn] are meeting Russian Prime Minister [Mikhail] Kasyanov. We do not know
yet what agreements they will reach concerning the construction of the spit and the situation with Tuzla Island.
