04 September 2002 04:00 Unemployment to go up in Russia - Forecast MOSCOW. Sept 4 (Interfax)- The total number of unemployed people calculated at International Labor Organization (ILO)
standards will reach 6.4 million people in 2005, compared with 6.1 million in 2001.
These data are contained in a forecast of Russia's socioeconomic development for 2003 and forecast parameters
throughout 2005 the Economic Development and Trade Ministry circulated on Wednesday.
As compared with 2001, the unemployment rate by 2005 will stand at 9% (6.4 million people). In 2002, it stands at
8.6%.
According to ILO standards, the unemployed are people without a job who are actively searching for one and are ready
to start working immediately. The economically active population is a combination of both people with a job and those
without it. The unemployment rate is calculated as the percentage ratio of the unemployed population to the economically
active population.
The number of registered unemployed is increasing from 1.1 million in 2001 to 1.7 million in 2005. According to
preliminary data, this figure will reach 1.3 million in 2002 (1.8% of the economically active population). The number of
registered unemployed, according to ILO standards, will go up from 21% in 2002 to 26.5% in 2005. [RU EUROPE EEU EMRG
