13 October 2003 03:35 Sport: PBF seeks more support by KPT Karachi, Oct 13 (PPI): President Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) Anwer Chowdhry has sought more support by Karachi
Port Trust (KPT) for the promotion of boxing. Speaking at a dinner reception given by KPT to the boxers and officials
who competed in Green Hill Cup, on Sunday at Manora DC Bungalows, he said that KPT should help the boxers and the
federation for the promotion of boxing, which had been its tradition. He said: "KPT should hold at least one
international boxing event every year on its expenses." He said that as the sport is poor man's sport in the
country it needs much help then any other sport. He said that annual grant of Rs 2 lakh by the government was very
meagre for the federation. He praised the role of KPT for providing jobs to the boxers and other facilities needed in
the sport. About future engagements of boxers, he said that the pugilists will go to Russia and Cuba for training
purpose before Olympic Qualifying round to be held in China, Philippines and Pakistan next year. Speaking on the
occasion, Chairman KPT, Vice Admiral Ahmed Hayat said that KPT has recently embarked upon yet another project wherein 13
young boxers have been selected to undergo rigorous training camps to polish their talent. He said two of the thirteen
boxers have already represented Pakistan in the 3rd World Cadet Boxing Championship held in Romania this year. He said
that KPT is also testing its strength in the fields of Cricket, Snooker, Football and other sports. In this regard, he
said, KPT is sponsoring players at the national and international level. Federal Minister for Communications, Ahmed Ali,
who was chief guest on the occasion, congratulated Mehrullah and Asghar Ali Shah on winning gold medals in Green Hill
Cup International Boxing Tournament and extended his all out support for the promotion of sports in the country. Later
he Districtributed shields among the winners and officials of different participating countries.
