10 October 2003 21:48 Opposition MP Sees No Need for Own Nuclear Storage Plant Budapest, October 10 (MTI) - An opposition Fidesz MP said Hungary did not need to build a storage plant for
high-level radioactive waste, speaking to reporters in Pecs (S) on Thursday.
"As Russia agreed to take used fuel rods from the Paks nuclear power station, it is needless to undertake an
environmental risk and spend hundreds of billions of forints on a domestic storage facility," said Zoltan Illes,
deputy chairman of Parliament's Environment Protection Committee.
The politician, who is also vice-president of Fidesz's Green Division, was responding to news of forthcoming
research for an optimal disposal site near the village of Boda in south Hungary.
Illes said he thought that the disposal of spent nuclear fuel could be resolved by the end of the power
station's lifetime in 2016, and even in case its service time was extended by 20 to 25 years.
