06 October 2003 11:28 Russia to co-operate with NATO in anti-terror campaign The security agencies of Russia, the United States and other NATO countries join will respond against international terrorism wherever this threat emerges. General Valentin Korabelnikov, in charge of the chief intelligence department of the General Staff of the Russian armed forces, who is accompanying Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov on a visit to Canada, said this in Ottawa.
The counter-terrorist operation in Afghanistan marked the beginning of co-operation between Russia's and the US' special services, recalled the general. "Today, the services are working together, among other regions, in the Middle and Near East," he added.
Russian and Western special services are maintaining particularly active contacts in Somalia, Yemen, Afghanistan and Pakistan - the countries that may harbour terrorists, according to General Korabelnikov. Special attention is being given to Gulf countries, where international terrorists are hiding. This problem raises heavier concern than the problems in Iraq and , he said.
"I am pleased with the way co-operation is developing and, above all, with the exchange of intelligence on terrorist bases and activities," he emphasised. Security agencies have a large co-operation potential, noted General Korabelnikov, adding, however, that they had to overcome the stereotypes of the cold war period.
