MONTREAL, Oct. 3 /CNW/ - An international conference of aluminum industry workers this weekend will focus on a trade
union response to globalization in the industry, especially following the merger of Canadian-based Alcan with
France's Pechiney. Co-sponsored by the United Steelworkers and the International Metalworkers' Federation
(IMF), the two-day conference starting Sunday (Oct. 5) will bring together 150 delegates from North and South America
and Europe to examine collective bargaining strategies and collaboration among all unions organized within the world
aluminum industry. Featured speakers at the conference include: United Steelworkers' International President Leo
Gerard; Michael Leahy, president of the IMF's Non-Ferrous Metals Department; Adriana Marcolino of the Trade Union
Institute of Statistical and Socio-economic Studies in Brazil; and IMF General Secretary Marcello Malentacchi. Aluminum
companies to be profiled include Pechiney, Alcan, Alcoa, Norsk Hydro, BHP, Rio Tinto, Russian Aluminum and others. The
meeting is expected to include a news conference and statement outlining the formation of a world aluminum union
council.
