25 September 2003 13:48 Russia expects unemployment to rise to 6m by year end Moscow, 25 September: The number of unemployed people in Russia is expected to reach 6m by the end of 2003, or 8.4
per cent of Russia's total labour force, an official with the Economic Development and Trade Ministry told
Prime-TASS on Thursday [25 September]. The figures were calculated according to the methodology used by the
International Labour Organization.
In September, Russia's unemployment rate is expected at 5.7m people or 7.9 per cent of the labour force, up from
5.5m people or 7.6 per cent of the labour force in August.
In September 2002, Russia had 5.5m unemployed people, while by the end of last year the figure had reached 5.7m.
At the same time, the number of officially registered unemployed people is forecast at 1.5m in September, or 2.1 per
cent of the total labour force, and at 1.6m, or 2.2 per cent of labour force, by the end of the year.
Russia's labour force was estimated at 72m as of the end of July, which is about half the country's total
population.
