25 September 2003 13:25 Moscow`s Sheremetyevo airport aims to impress airlines with emergency drill A large-scale exercise has been held at Sheremetyevo international airport. The script presupposed the following
scenario. Contact with the crew of a Seoul-bound Il-62 airliner is lost immediately after takeoff. Ground staff report
they can see the aircraft with its engines on fire. The airliner's pilots make an emergency landing three
kilometres from the runway. Fire engines and ambulances reach the scene within 15 minutes. The rescue operation begins.
The most important objectives are to extinguish the fire and evacuate the casualties. A field hospital where the injured
are given first aid is set up at the scene of the accident. The uninjured are taken aboard buses to the airport
terminal. These people have suffered severe shock and need assistance from qualified psychiatrists.
Rescue services at the airport have to practise similar scenarios several times a year - whenever demanded by
representatives of airlines whose planes use the airport's infrastructure.
