Russia`s Ivanov says UN resolution would aid Mideast process
United Nations, 24 September: The efforts of the international `quartet' seeking to bring about a Middle East settlement "will become more effective if they are based on an appropriate resolution of the UN Security Council". This was stated today by Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov at a meeting with foreign ministers of European Union states and prospective members. The conversation took place on the sidelines of the 58th session of the UN General Assembly. The participants in the talks, sources in the Russian delegation noted, "were of the unanimous view that the international community must occupy a more robust position in the search for ways of settling the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. At the same time, the need for the Israeli and Palestinian sides strictly to fulfil obligations enshrined in the step-by-step settlement plan was noted. The prospects for broadening external monitoring in the conflict zone were also discussed.
