19 September 2003 22:49 Russia`s population declines 0.3% MOSCOW. Sept 19 (Interfax) - Russia's population declined 0.3% in the first seven months of 2003, mainly due to
the natural loss factor.
The population decreased by 506,200 to 144.5 million, the State Statistics Committee said, adding that this was an
estimate which also took into account the preliminary results of the national census.
Natural population loss during the period was 531,200, but this was still 30,000 fewer than in the same period of
last year. However migration growth is declining, and compensated only 4.7% of the population loss.
A total of 873,100 births were registered in the first seven months of 2003, compared with 811,300 in the same period
of last year, and 1.404 million deaths, compared with 1.373 million. In other words, both the birth rate and the
mortality rate are on the increase, but the birth rate is growing faster, by 7.6% compared with 2.3%.
A total of 515,900 marriages were registered, compared with 495,300 in the first seven months of 2002, and 461,900
divorces, compared with 507,500.
Natural population growth, when the birth rate exceed the death rate, was seen in 15 Russian regions, compared with
12 in the first seven months of 2002.
During the period, 79,100 migrants entered Russia, compared with 115,400, and 54,200 people emigrated, compared with
60,100. Thus, migration growth, when the number of arrivals exceed the number of departures, was 24,900, compared with
55,300 a year previously. [RU ASIA EUROPE EEU EMRG D MCE ECI] PR <>
