20 September 2003 10:00 No more economic crises expected Putin tells congress Moscow, 20 September: Russia will not be threatened by economic crises, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said. "For the first time in many years we have not got the threat of another economic crisis hanging over us," Putin said at the third congress of the One Russia party on Saturday [20 September]. At the same time Putin said that "life goes on and sets new goals ". He reminded the audience that for Russia these strategic goals are "to double the country's GDP in 10 years, to combat poverty and modernize the armed forces". "It is our common business to carry out these tasks, and parties, especially those that have a real chance to win at the election to the State Duma, should take part in implementing them," Putin said. According to him, it is not enough to simply assist in resolving these tasks. "Political parties have to be several steps ahead and direct society, and for this they have to know society's demands and the needs of citizens," the president stressed. He said that parties "should offer the state as well as its citizens the future strategic agenda of Russia's development and firmly stand by those decisions that meet the people's aspirations and expectations". The Russian president is confident that only then will it be possible to win over votes as well as the confidence of electors.
