18 September 2003 11:58 Russia signs four-party memo on competition policy St Petersburg, 18 September: Representatives of Russia, the Republic of Korea, Latvia and Romania signed a memorandum
on cooperation in competition policies on 17 September, Ilya Yuzhanov, the Russian minister of antimonopoly policy and
enterprise support, told a news conference.
The document is unique because the CIS interstate council for antimonopoly policy signed it as an independent party,
which marks new quality standards in cooperation between the antimonopoly bodies of CIS member-states. Another important
point is the participation of the Republic of Korea which initiated the signing of the memorandum.
Korea's committee for fair trade and the councils for competition of Latvia and Romania took part in preparing
the document.
Initially, all the Baltic states and Hungary intended to sign up, but some of the states opted out in view of their
expected entry into the WTO, Yuzhanov said. [Passage omitted]
