Russia calls on Israelies, Palestinians to "stop the standoff" - envoy
Tel Aviv, 11 September: "No political aims can justify the use of terrorist methods," special envoy of the Russian foreign minister and ambassador at large Andrey Vdovin said after a meeting with Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom in Jerusalem. "The Russian side presented condolences over the tragic aftermaths of the terrorist acts," Vdovin noted. Fifteen people were killed and about 80 were wounded in the blasts in the south of Tel-Aviv and Jerusalem on Tuesday and Wednesday [10 September]. At the meeting with Shalom "the situation in the Israeli-Palestinian relations and the need to fulfil commitments assumed by both sides in compliance with the provisions of the Road Map peace plan were discussed," the Russian special envoy emphasized. "Russia calls on the Israeli leadership and the Palestinian national administration to act in the current situation absolutely responsibly and try to stop the standoff," he remarked. A working meeting of the quartet of international mediators (United States, Russia, the EU and the UN) was held in Israel on Wednesday at which the ways to overcome the current crisis in the zone of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict were discussed.
