The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Russian Federation has started preparing documents for the extradition of Russian businessman Vladimir Gusinsky, who was arrested in Greece last week. According to the Information and Public Relations Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office, a formal notification of Mr. Gusinsky’s arrest has been received from Greece. It was translated into the Russian on Tuesday, and the preparation of documents about the businessman’s extradition to Russia has begun.
In accordance with international law and the Russian-Greek agreement on legal aid between, all documents should be translated into the Greek. At present, it is being considered whether it is necessary to send investigators involved in Mr. Gusinsky’s case to Greece.
A Greek court ordered on Monday that Vladimir Gusinsky be held in detention until the question about his extradition to Russia is settled. He was taken into custody immediately after the court hearing. The Russian businessman is expected to spend about two months in custody. Greek authorities are awaiting a formal extradition request from Russia.
Vladimir Gusinsky was detained at the Athens airport on August 23 after arriving from Tel Aviv, Israel. A routine computer check revealed that his name appeared on an Interpol ‘stop list'.
A criminal case against Vladimir Gusinsky was opened on November 13, 2000. He was accused of misrepresenting the assets of his company Media-Most to obtain a $262m loan from the government-controlled gas giant Gazprom. In 2000, Vladimir Gusinsky was detained in Spain. However, in April 2003, a Spanish court refused to extradite him to Russia.
