06 August 2003 16:55 Russian government to subsidize train trips to Kaliningrad Moscow, 6 August: Russian Deputy Prime Minister Viktor Khristenko said on Thursday [as received, probably Wednesday 6
August] that the government would subsidize the train trips of passengers going to Kaliningrad and the Far East out of
the 2004 federal budget.
Khristenko said after a meeting of the government commission for tariff regulation on railway transport that the
government would allocate about R200m, no less than this year, to finance train carriages to and from Kaliningrad Region
next year.
"The ticket price will become more affordable for Kaliningrad residents willing to travel to any other Russian
city," Khristenko went on to say.
About R1bn are expected to be allocated to subsidize railway transportation of passengers to the Far East. Khristenko
said that the final sum would be agreed later.
"The government should support citizens' trips to regions like Kaliningrad and the Far East on a permanent
basis," Khristenko said.
