31 July 2003 23:43 Population Sir--Denis Dutton (July 19) comments on Russia's very low birth rate. Not having children is a rational response
to lawlessness and economic collapse. In spite of that, world population continues to grow by 78 million per year
adding, as Derek J. Wilson points out in Five Holocausts, "another China every 15 years".
In saying of India with its income of $US460 per person per annum, "Its rise in living standards has produced a
fall in its birth rate", Dr Dutton reverses cause and effect. In African countries, or most Muslim countries, where
birth control is little used and population increases about 3 per cent a year, a rise in living standards is quite
impossible.
Even a recent Time magazine article admits that Pakistan is in a hopeless mess without, of course, mentioning the
taboo subject of its birth rate.
The fundamentalists and Denis Duttons of this world devote themselves to not mentioning real problems or
controversial solutions.
