Russia, EU, NATO to deal with catastrophes, terrorist acts together - minister Brussels, 1 July: Sergey Shoygu, Russian minister for civil defense and emergencies, has told Russian journalists
after his visit to Brussels that Russia and the EU agreed to establish in the near future a European centre to combat
catastrophes. All the countries of the continent will be involved in the project.
Experts and politicians will meet in the autumn to create a legal basis and a single practical mechanism for the
centre which would start to operate when there is an emergency or a serious catastrophe. "We have reached agreement
with High Representative [for Common Foreign and Security Policy] of the EU Javier Solana on this matter", Sergey
Shoygu said.
He said that similar agreements on establishing a reaction force dealing with possible consequences of terrorist
attacks on chemical and nuclear installations were made during the talks with NATO Secretary-General George Robertson.
Shoygu said that NATO and Russia intend to establish a complete database of technical means and technologies which both
parties possess, and to create a multinational force to combat these threats.
