Russian national security official calls for UN to step up antiterror measures

The secretary of Russia's National Security Council, Igor Ivanov, has called for the rapid adoption of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism. Ivanov made this statement today at the International Summit on Democracy, Terrorism and Security.
"The consensual adoption at a session of the UN General Assembly of the International Convention for the Suppression of Acts of Nuclear Terrorism would be an important element in the efforts of the world community to prevent terrorists from getting access to weapons of mass destruction," Ivanov stressed.
He also spoke in favour of improving UN structures and mechanisms. "We think it is important to quickly complete the reform of the UN Security Council's Counterterrorism Committee and to get the Counterterrorism Committee Executive Directorate working at full steam," Ivanov said. Moreover, the "central coordinating role of the UN in the organization of collective international resistance to terrorism should be indisputable", he stressed.
